How much time would you save if you had all the tools you needed for a commercial sewing project like sewing pattern McCall’s 7262? I’m sure you’re counting in your head right now, but there’s no need for that anymore. Why you may ask. Well, my goal is to help you save a lot of time so you can focus on sewing and not supply runs. To give you a little background as to why I chose McCall’s 7262 for my first project as you know it’s Black History Month and for the past couple of years, I never get to sew a pattern by a black designer. Something always comes up, but not this year.
In my search, I came across Khaliah Ali’s sewing pattern McCall’s 7262. If you don’t know who she is the daughter of the late great Muhammad Ali. She is a designer, author, and philanthropist. Umm, can we say goals? Her pattern is out of stock on McCall’s website, which is not surprising. It’s one of her most popular patterns. I know you are going to like it so I found some copies on Amazon. McCall’s 7262 is my personal favorite because it reminds me of how sharp the women in life would dress growing up.
I imagine this paired with a cute pair of boots, turtleneck, and boot-cut jeans and you have a look for running errands, exploring the city, or watching your kids play sports.I know what you’re thinking, “That sounds great and all, but girl you live in Phoenix. It doesn’t get cold there.” That’s correct, but the plan is to travel during the cooler months this year so I am trying to be prepared and make clothes for colder weather.

Description: Loose-fitting sweater coats and poncho with a shaped hemline.
Size Chosen: 14

Fabric Choice: Bouclé, which is loosely woven with small curls or loops. I purchased mine from Melanated Fabrics. Suggested fabrics are Sweater Knits, Wool Jersey, or Ponte Knits
Color: Maroon and black. (Although this color isn’t available, they do have a pretty Merlot).
Sewing Tools Needed That Aren’t Mentioned:
Rotary cutter or scissors
Hand needle for the buttons
Iron
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you finished sewing it?
Yes, it did. When it is left open it doesn’t drape the same, but I wanted a heavier coat so I went with bouclé because I knew it would work.
Are the instructions easy to follow?
Yes, this is a beginner pattern as the envelope suggests.
What did you particularly like or dislike about sewing pattern McCall’s 7262?
Liked
I like how straightforward the directions were. It was easy to follow, which says a lot about how Ms. Ali writes. She didn’t overcomplicate the instructions.
Disliked
Absolutely nothing.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
The only change I made was using a fabric that wasn’t suggested.
Would you sew it again?
Most definitely. I would sew this again maybe in a lighter fabric so that I could wear it during the Fall season.
How long did it take? 3-4 days
Tips to avoid the sewing pattern McCall’s 7262 from taking as long and other advice:
Make sure you buy quality thread. Buying cheap thread will only cost you more time. It will break while you are sewing. Also, do not keep the iron on the fabric long because you do not want to smash the loops.
Remember to save those tools because they will save you time and effort when you start working on this pattern.
